MODERN SURREALISM
Artist statement
My work is a visual exploration of sensation and perception. I examine perspective through the lens of image appropriation and composition, as well as the perception of media and pop culture from a female perspective. Repurposing imagery of the senses and images from mass-marketed magazines, my work engages in a dialogue about the essence of humanity in an information-saturated world. Space serves as a symbol of confinement, containing a larger narrative that unfolds within my pieces.
Through my work, viewers are compelled to confront the discomfort of the newly curated image. Influenced by Surrealist and Dadaist movements, I draw upon human psychology to delve into the depths of the human experience. While my creative process is largely intuitive, I strategically recontextualize icons within new spaces to evoke a sense of intrigue tempered with apprehension.
By incorporating pop culture and mass-marketed imagery, I challenge societal norms by shifting familiar images into confrontational spaces. My exploration of the human experience continually evolves, with a specific focus on the imagery marketed to American women and the underlying messages conveyed through such visuals. Contextualizing historical perspectives within a contemporary framework, I investigate the modern-day experience of womanhood in a technologically advanced era.
